Veltliner grappa. Veltliner, actually better known in Austria as Grüner Veltliner, has been cultivated since Roman times. It thrives on soils which can be either poor or rich in nutrients, although it needs a sunny autumn to complete ripening in order to express its full aroma potential. In South Tyrol wine growers from the Isarco valley have specialised in its production; they produce wines with fruity tangs whose notes can even become peppery, and a nose reminiscent of wild flowers and meadow herbs. This complex aroma interplay makes Veltliner Grappa by Zu Plun, too, a particularly interesting distillation. Also the pomace for this characteristic specialty comes from the Isarco valley, more specifically the production region around the Neustift Cloister.
